10-8-22 Eintracht Frankfurt 0 Real Madrid 2 UEFA Super Cup

Real Madrid win their fifth UEFA Super Cup.

Los Blancos dominate in Helsinki as goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema beat the Europa Cup winners.

Despite having the majority of the support the Germans never really looked like troubling Carlo Ancelotti's Champions League holders.

Real Madrid met Eintracht Frankfurt in a repeat of the famous 1960 European Cup final.

The result was the same, a win for the Spaniards, although the 7-3 scoreline was never likely to be emulated.

Los Blancos did dominate possession with the peerless midfield of Kroos and Modric controlling the tempo.

The ease with which that duo could switch focus, often out to Vinicius Junior, meant Frankfurt were often under pressure.

And with the prolific Benzema in the centre there was an ever-present danger to Trapp in goal.

However, the Germans did produce the best early chance when Dachi Kamada was set free on the left.

But his low drive was well blocked by Courtois.

It would be their only serious opportunity.

As RM would soon produce a great chance at the other end.

With Benzema delivering to Vinicius who beat Trapp before seeing Brazilian Tuta diverting the shot away from near the line.

That same combination soon created another shot to test Trapp.

And from the resulting Kroos corner, the French striker got up to head towards Casemiro who played it back to David Alaba for an easy finish.

It was well deserved.

The ex-Bayern midfielder, Kroos, then superbly intercepted a move before crossing to Benzema who shot wide.

Nevertheless, it illustrated the dominance of Madrid.

They headed most of the significant stats.

And continued in the same vein in the second half.

Although the highly-rated Ansgar Knauff did test Courtois later on.

On 65 minutes the match was effectively decided when Vinicius drove down the left and passed inside to Benzema.

His first-time effort (a sign of a confident striker) sped past Trapp for 2-0.

If anything, the Spanish giants might have scored more after finding extra space as the game wore on.

With five allowed, both sides brought on a string of substitutes but without changing the outcome.

On a technical note, the use of semi-automated offside technology seemed to function well as we had no delays.

Or indeed any other VAR-related incidents.

Ultimately, Real Madrid could celebrate a joint-record fifth Super League and look forward to another solid La Liga and Champions League campaign.

For Frankfurt, at least they will avoid playing a team with the class of RM every week.
