Ulm has at least two claims to fame.
It was the birthplace of one of the greatest-ever physicists, Albert Einstein.
And its gothic Ulm Minster towers some 161 metres making it the tallest church spire in the world.
The local football team cannot, perhaps, match those accolades but on this late March evening they did secure a victory to help them battle against relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga.
They did it with two quick goals near the start of the second half.
And though the visitors had more of the play, and generally better chances they only managed a single response.
Going into this contest towards the foot of the second tier the home side desperately needed points to move up the table.
While Darmstadt, who brought a lively group of fans along with their fireworks, were also not far off the drop zone.
And it was the visitors who had the better of the first 45 with Danish striker Lidberg prominent although he should have converted at least one of his chances.
Which sometimes came from the left wing work of Bueno.
At the other end there were few serious threats from the home side.
However, that soon changed after the interval.
First, frontman Lucas Roser diverted in a right cross following a couple of blocks by the away defenders.
Then, midfielder Oliver Batista Meier drove in a fine 25 metre effort to make it 2-0 and really get the crowd going.
In a couple of minutes the game had switched strongly in favour of the home team.
Inevitably Darmstadt made substitutions but they managed just the one reply after 21-year-old Clemens Riedel headed home direct from a corner.
But whenever the visitors did get close home goalie Niclas Thiede remained solid and ultimately Ulm rode out the six added minutes without too many issues.
The home fans could celebrate as their team gained their fourth league victory and garnered some more hope for avoiding a quick return to the 3.Liga.
