8-2-2023 Al Ahly 1 Real Madrid 4 FIFA Club World Cup 2022

Multiple winners Real Madrid proved too strong for Al Ahly with Los Blancos running out 4-1 winners before over 43,000 fans in Rabat, Morocco.

The Egyptians went into this semi-final with some confidence being on a 23-game unbeaten run while the Spanish side had mixed recent results.

But with midfield prompters like Modric, Kroos, the emerging talent of Tchouameni, and the electric pace of Rodrygo and Vini Junior upfront it was always going to be a tough assignment for the Cairo giants.

Real Madrid might be losing their grip on the La Liga title but they can still win other trophies.

And the FIFA Club World Cup is one of those, as Los Blancos are hot favourites to claim a record-extending fifth crown.

Despite missing captain Benzema and goalie Courtois the Spanish side always looked too strong for Al Ahly.

Although Marcelo Koller's charges were on a roll, having not lost for 23 matches and aiming for a first CWC final.

But it is hard to contain the talent of the Modric, Kroos, and the emergent, tall, Tchouameni.

That midfield continued to prompt the lightning-quick forwards Rodrygo and Vini Junior.

Inevitably chances were created and though they were initially spurned the pressure told.

And it was a mistake by the Al Ahly defence that allowed Vini to dispossess Mahmoud and go on to neatly chip over goalie El Shenawy.

Though the Egyptians had the occasional break, especially from El Shahat down the right, it was mostly a controlling first period for the European champions who went in one up.

Straight after the break, it was 2-0 after Modric passed to Rodrygo and on to Valverde for an easy finish.

Though Camavinga would trip El Shahat later in the half allowing Maaloul to score from the spot to reduce the deficit it was perhaps inevitable that RM would go on to victory.

They did, completing the task with goals from Rodrygo (after a sweet combination with Ceballos) and a neat control and left-foot shot from young substitute Arribas.

That was despite Modric having an earlier penalty effort easily saved.

And so Real Madrid progressed into another final, where they will be massively favoured to beat surprise qualifiers Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia in what is likely to be the last such decider in this format of the Club World Cup.

Meanwhile, Al Ahly will face Flamengo in their third consecutive consolation match.
