26-2-2023 Rangers 1 Celtic 2 Viaplay (League) Cup final

Played to an intense backdrop of noise and fireworks this Old Firm derby went the way of the League Cup holders, Celtic.

Ange Postecoglou's Japanese stars played key parts in this triumph that could set them on the way to another domestic treble.

While it will leave coach Michael Beale with plenty to consider as his Light Blues never really looked like adding to their record haul of titles.

Before 50,000 committed fans, split 50:50 at Hampden Park, this League Cup final sponsored by Viaplay went the way of the favourites, Celtic.

It would be the first defeat for Rangers coach Michael Beale and would undoubtedly give him and his players plenty of food for thought.

His Light Blues generally underperformed and though they managed a Morelos strike to reduce the deficit they never really looked like recovering the situation.

That was evident to many of their fans who were making their way home well before the final whistle.

A lot of the problems came down the Gers right where James Tavernier was forced back by the opposition pressure and in particular Daizen Maeda.

Their midfield of Lundstram, Kamara, and Tillman was also often second-best to their Celtic counterparts.

It was the men in green who passed it around and usually delivered the chances.

Culminating in a Taylor left-wing cross, just before the break, that eventually reached Kyogo Furuhashi to score from close range.

A good time to score - but it was deserved.

Soon after the interval Rangers did have one of their best chances when Ryan Kent struck the woodwork.

However, danger man Kent had few other opportunities as it was Fashion Sakala who had more space wide on the right.

But the Zambian couldn't produce the break or find the telling cross.

And on the hour, predictably from right, Celtic delivered the knockout blow when Mooy and Hatate combined to set up Kyogo for his second.

Although the generally frustrated Morelos did pull a goal back it always seemed the holders would manage the successful outcome.

Coach Beale did eventually change the midfield and for a while the lively Cantwell, Raskin, and Jack caused some problems but it was never enough.

In fact, the Bhoys probably should have added a least one more after O'Riley and Korean Oh broke away.

So with Carter-Vickers and co. solid at the back, a good base in midfield, and a set of Japanese stars Celtic secured the Glasgow bragging rights and held onto their League Cup title.

For Rangers, they will need to regroup and find some inspiration to stop their bitter rivals from clinching that domestic treble.
