11-6-22 Romania 1 Finland 0 UEFA Nations League

Romania secured an important first win in their Nations League group despite missing a penalty.

It kept their challenge in place in what is likely to be a tight group.

While for the Finns it was another abortive attempt to beat the Tricolorii.

A single goal from Nicosur Bancu decided the outcome.

Romania returned to the redeveloped Rapid stadium in Bucharest for the first time since 2011.

And for their initial game of Group 3 of League B in the NL.

The vibrant home crowd (sometimes over-vibrant with the flares) saw an energetic first-half performance by their favourites.

With Romania playing at a brisk pace the match was played at a good tempo.

Early on they would go close when Cicaldau headed onto the bar.

That was soon followed by the award of a spot-kick for a foul on Olaru.

However, Romanian striker George Puscas failed to convert after his effort was easily blocked by Jesse Joronen.

But the Pisa front-man would get some redemption when he created space on the right and crossed for Bancu to head in for 1-0.

It was a deserved lead for the home side.

The Tricolorii had looked more dangerous in the final third, often pressing forward with 3 or 4 attackers.

The pattern did change after the break as the home side did more consolidating (and more time-wasting)

Finland then had more possession with Rangers' midfielder Glen Kamara usually setting up the play.

That would eventually create good opportunities for the tall Joel Pohjanpalo.

But one header was a bit too casual and the other time he misjudged an excellent cross.

Home goalie Florin Nita would make one superb save.

With the generally ineffective Pukki replaced the Finns would make changes but without altering the outcome.

In fact, Romanian substitute Valentin Milhaila would nearly extend the home advantage with a speedy break and shot late in the half.

So an important win for Romania in what is likely to be a tight group, alongside Bosnia and Montenegro.

While Finland, who brought a lively group of fans, still haven't beaten the Tricolorii.
